’Markers’ Paul Senyol solo exhibition at David Krut Projects

An exhibition in association with Salon Ninety One

20 June to 13 July 2019
OPENING Date: 20 June 2019; from 6 – 8 pm
142A Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Johannesburg
Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm; Saturdays 9am to 4pm

Within daily life and one’s movements through space, there are certain (sometimes recurring) moments, shapes or forms that come to punctuate our existence in place. Markers is Paul Senyol’s latest musing on these impressions shaped by fluidity and movement. The works draw on the ways that people insert themselves into the material nature of space. Carving one’s name into a tree, graffiti scratchings on a bus stop, Mile Stones erected by the Romans or Portuguese crosses constructed by the early explorers at various landing sites. These acts of personal cartography are related to the artist’s own process of mark making which functions as a cartographic reference point in paint on canvas in face of the mutability of life in motion.

Paul Senyol is an abstract painter who reflects the details of everyday life, paired down to an empathy with colour, line and form. His work is a carefully crafted response to his wonderings through various spaces. The colours and textures of urban and natural environments inform his spontaneous practice in the studio. Skateboarding emerged as a gateway to early creative works on the street and remains an important part of Senyol’s experience of urban spaces. His unique visual language is founded on the inevitable change and flux in environments and his works are testament to the translation of experiences into form.

‘Kindle’, A duo exhibition by Gideon Appah (Ghana) and Paul Senyol (South Africa) 06 October - 03 November 2016, Gallery2

‘Kindle is an exhibition of new works on canvas and linen. This shift in medium resonates with my new works as they become more intimately related to their texture and backgrounds. Kindle continues my exploration and thoughts relating to our relationship between the built and natural environments.

My works are influenced by the shapes, forms, color and textures found during my everyday encounters as I move through these environments. Kindle conjures up thoughts of beginnings, of origins, of seeking and finding, of stoking a fire and bringing something back to life.
There is a certain immediacy and urgency to my works for the exhibition. Each work serving as a snapshot, perhaps a sentence from a paragraph, or a chapter from a non-fiction, sometimes only one word can make all the difference.’ - Paul Senyol.

Gideon Appah and Paul Senyol first met at the 2015 Barclays L’Atelier competition, where both were top10 finalists.
Gideon’s work having won the prize for the best foreign entry and a residency stay at the Bag Factory in 2016.
From their first conversations, both artists realised a common influence, origin, and explorative themes to their work. This led to the idea of exhibiting together which has become a reality after Gideon recently completed his residency at the Bag Factory.
Both artists look forward to presenting a body of fresh, bold and exciting new works for Kindle.
The hope is that this will be the beginning of a relationship between them as painters which will continue to flourish in the years to come.
